A Plea For People Of The World To Take Care Of Themselves
Written by Ali Fischer March 22, 2020 There has never been a time on this planet where it has been so obvious that taking care of oneself's health is THE most radical political, social, and economical action one could take. Yes, there are those who were born immunocompromised and who naturally grow into life-threatening illness or those that simply are on the end of their trajectory life curve. However, the majority of those who find themselves sick, have consciously or unconsciously put themselves there. The research and information on how to best take care of ourselves is very accessible at this point in our society. Thousands of articles, films, and books have been made on the subject and there are multitudes of ways one can choose to get the job done. From at least an educational perspective, there is no excuse as to why someone would not know how to live a healthy lifestyle. My own father was born with a genetic condition that made him more likely to develop tumors. He died at his projected lifespan age of thirty-four years old. As a child, I watched how he took care of himself those few robust years and it was not what one might expect of how someone might approach their impaired condition. He smoked, he partied, he slept little, got little exercise, and there were no health parameters on his diet. He basically lived hard and fast till he was diagnosed with cancer and given six months to live. Then I got to see how western medicine handled his predicament. They shot him up with all the chemo a person could take and “cut out” the cancer by amputating his leg in hopes of extending his life. To no avail, he died exactly six months from diagnosis. There was never any mention by any doctor about how he could change how he was attending to himself in a physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual way. Zilch. That experience was incredibly confusing, disheartening, and sad for me as a child. So much so, that I deeply promised myself that I would do everything I could do to make the right choices concerning my health and make a career of bringing awareness to people about just how important it is to be proactive about one’s health. My bottom line lesson from all of that was to become ‘response-able’ is the most responsible political and economical course of action for ourselves and our planetary community. Here’s the deal, folks…. if you do not make healthy choices for yourself and your family, you will negatively impact the world. There is no other way to slice it. You are living from a victim mentality if you do not realize that YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR HEALTH. Here is a plea from my New York City apartment on PAUSE. Please do everything you can to boost your immune system. This includes getting as close to eight hours of sleep as you can per night. Eat your fruits and vegetables, minimize (or take out completely) processed foods and sugar, and cook! Do stress reducing techniques such as exercise, meditation, and getting a massage more often. Attend to yourself emotionally by journaling and finding other creative outlets to express and get to know yourself. We are fundamentally creative beings and without some outlet to express ourselves, we will inevitably and unconsciously wield that creativity into potentially destructive habits. Take care of your home using mundane chores to slow down and find peace in ‘beingness’. These are just a few ideas on how to boost our immunity. All of us are responsible for one another in this effort because we are basically one big interconnected immunity system. We understand this because our bodies are mostly made of microorganisms that are farmed in our gut system. Every day our body’s family of microorganisms meets the outside world through our skin and digestive system. This new virus is the new bad kid on the block. I am going to go ahead and assume (without waiting for a vaccine) it is here to stay and we need to upgrade our immune system by most likely eventually coming into contact with it. This is mother nature’s forced upgrade. Just think of her like your capitalistically enforced upgrade on your most coveted smartphone device. If you love and value this life and the lives of our children, do not just sit on your coach, eat Doritos, and drink beer. Get up and learn new food recipes that are tasty and nourishing for your community of microorganisms! Play with your children and invent new games. Go for a run and come back and learn new yoga or exercise techniques on YouTube. Get curious about your perceived reality and what you do not know about the universe and meditate on this great mystery of being alive and breathing! It is miraculous to be alive and now more than ever we have the opportunity to look within and get to know ourselves better. Like that old Nike saying, “Just Do It!”. The earth and all living beings on this planet will thank you.
